The Nonviolent Action Community of Cascadia is a Seattle-based organization which uses non-violent action to create political and social change. NACC acts to interrupt and transform militarism and other forms of violence, and to build a society based upon community, economic justice, environmental awareness, personal empowerment, and feminist, queer-positive and anti-racist principles.
NACC uses creative nonviolent direct action, war tax resistance, public education and coalition-building towards these ends, creating community and developing empowerment and conflict-resolution skills in the process.
Begun in 1979 as the Conscience and Military Tax Campaign, NACC was founded by war tax resisters intent on refusing to allow their tax dollars to be spent on warfare and killing. NACC still administers the CMTC Escrow Account, the largest fund of resisted tax dollars in the U.S.. For several years we have annually granted a large percentage of our Escrow Account interest to local, national and international groups working for peace and justice.
NACC seeks grant applications from grassroots groups that organize around issues of peace, social justice and community empowerment. NACC defines "organizing" as collective action to challenge the status quo, demand changes in policy and practice, and educate communities about root causes and just solutions. We support strategies that build community, encourage collaborations with other organizations, and increase skills and/or access to resources. Higher priority is given to groups considered too "radical" to attract mainstream funding, and also to smaller groups (i.e. gross receipts under $200,000). We will accept applications from groups working on local, regional, national, and/or international issues. In this granting cycle, we are giving special but not exclusive consideration to groups that are developing grassroots initiatives to help individuals and communities respond to the economic hard times at home and abroad.
Applicants are encouraged to download an application (see above). Alternatively, one may contact the NACC office to receive a hard copy, to ask questions. 501(c)3 status or sponsorship is not a requirement for NACC grants. We try to make the application process as simple and painless as possible. While this does not mean that you can escape the hard work of planning out your organizing projects and grant requests, it does mean that we will try to minimize the hoops you need to jump through in order to receive a grant.
The maximum grant request that NACC will consider for this funding cycle is $2,000. We are not considering multi-year grants at this time, but groups may re-apply in the next funding cycle even if we fund you this time around. In previous granting cycles, we have received between twelve and forty proposals and distributed at least $7,000 in grants. It is frequently our practice to award a partial amount of the total requested.
The deadline for grant applications for the Spring 2009 funding cycle is May 15, 2009. Recipients will announced by June 30, 2009. Please note that all requests must use a NACC Grant Application form (feel free to reproduce the form to make it easier to complete the form electronically – but please maintain the same question order and page strcuture). If you choose to complete your application by hand, please make sure your handwriting is clear and easy to read.
Good luck!
For those who may be interested, we've assembled a list of past recipients, dating back to the 2001 inception of the granting program.
If you know of an organisation that should apply for this grant, please pass along to it the web address of this page. Also, don't hesitate to post, circulate, or publish in any appropriate venue the following text announcement and/or the advertisement (right-click on the image to download). Thanks!
